Dress For Success

Let God dress you. Here is another picture from Isaiah, “I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For He has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness.” (Isaiah 61:10a) “Jesus, Thy blood and righteousness my beauty are, my glorious dress…” (LSB, 563, Verse 1)

We Are Beggars; It Is True

But what does it also say? It says, “We are beggars; It is true.” The needs that exist in our world, and with our fellow human beings, are multiplying. In the Tuesday paper was the picture that captured our eyes for these days. A young man is shielding a young lady on the asphalt at the music festival in Las Vegas. Was she dead? Injured? Was this his girlfriend or wife? Matthew Cobos, a soldier in the U.S. Army, was protecting a stranger. He covered her from the danger and then covered her eyes from her having to witness the bloodshed all around. Shortly after that picture was taken they were able to run to safety, but he returned applying medical care to those who had been shot and were injured. There were a lot of beggars there. There were many who were asking for mercy. I’m glad that he and many others were available to give care.

Taking A Stand

Jesus has taken a stand for us. He is ever faithful to us. He stands with us in life’s darkest times. He stands with us not wanting our faith to fail. He stands with us as a Savior from evil and as the Lord who rules over all things.

Joy’s First Step

Jesus brings us joy. Your sins have all been paid for by Jesus. You are forgiven. You are clean and pure, considered complete through the blood of Christ. That is joy. You are going to live forever in heaven. No doubt about it!! You will live in the best mansion and enjoy the splendor of God’s peace and love. Jesus rose from death, your hope for salvation rests not in your deeds, but in His. You have a hope of forgiveness and are given eternal life in Jesus. That is joy.

Steering Wheel or Spare Tire?

I don’t think we pray as much as we should. There are times when we treat prayer as a last resort. Nothing else has worked, so I guess we should pray!! We have no hope, so we pray. Prayer in Jesus’ name is much greater than that!! Corrie ten Boom first asked the question, “Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?” In other words, is prayer the guiding factor in all of your life, like the steering wheel on your car, or is prayer something you whip out in case of an emergency, like the spare tire in your trunk? Is prayer the first priority in your daily life, or is it the last resort? Is it your steering wheel or your spare tire? F.B. Meyer said, “The greatest tragedy in life is not unanswered prayer, but unoffered prayer.”

One Tough Step

That is one tough step, though. To go to another person when there is a difference between us is hard. Sometimes we don’t want to forgive. Sometimes we don’t want to deal with the problem anymore. We keep it. We hide it. We use it as ammunition for the right moment of getting even.

It’s a Dog Eat God Life

This Canaanite woman was an outcast from the perspective of an Israelite. But this outcast knows it and has accepted it. She doesn’t fight against the attitude that Jesus has expressed. She doesn’t deny it. She doesn’t try to defend herself in hope of making herself acceptable. She has come to embrace it as the truth. So now she speaks these words of faith. “She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”” (Matthew 15:27) In these simple words she describes the whole of humanity before God.

Tomorrow – Worry or Wonder?

Tomorrow, should it be worry, or wonder? Wonder!! Sometimes I wish I had a mind for the sciences, like so many of you, because science is just so amazing. I wonder if someone has already calculated the exact time and path for this next total eclipse that is going to come to our area 375 years from now. Don’t you just love creation!! It is orderly, predictable. That is how our great God has made it. All this stuff that we see didn’t arrive here by chance, by some big mistake, no – God in His genius, in His formation, has done all of this by His miraculous mind.

Playing The Hand You Are Dealt

Have you ever heard the phrase, “You have to play the hand you are dealt”? The phrase comes from playing cards. You get so many cards, and you can’t get different ones, (at least in some games), and you have to do what you can with the cards you are given. Job was dealt these cards – Job had this life to live, with all the loss and the suffering. How would he do it? I’ve been here long enough to know that many of you have been dealt a hand that is not a royal flush, not even two pair. What will you do the hand dealt to you?
