Contemporary Worship Leader Job Summary
Ascension Lutheran Church in Littleton, CO is seeking a passionate and dedicated Contemporary Worship Leader to join our church team. The Worship Leader directs and manages our contemporary worship services; makes music selections based on theme and directs and rehearses the praise band. (The Praise Team plays September thru May at the 10:30 a.m. service.) The Worship Leader also provides spiritual guidance, care and prayer for the team members. The Worship Leader will ensure that the services are meaningful for our members with an engaging mix of music with quality texts and tunes.
Contemporary Worship Leader Qualifications and Responsibilities
1+ years of experience leading worship services preferred
Self-starter who strives for quality
Can skillfully play a lead instrument in the worship band (guitar or keyboard)
Ability to perform on that instrument using just a lead line with chords
Quality singing voice for leading songs in worship and teaching songs in rehearsal
Skilled in giving vocal and instrumental direction
Knowledge of past and current contemporary worship music, but also able to occasionally incorporate other styles such as traditional or Gospel.
Ability to effectively lead and engage a congregation in worship
Good leadership, verbal and written communication skills including weekly sharing of details and song information via email and/or text with the praise team
Experience with the use of technology in worship especially the sound system, mixer, and microphones and have an ear for balance (FYI, we don’t currently use screens in worship so there is not yet a need for visual technology skills and use of visual apps).
Ability to use CCLI’s Song Select app and charts and use the copier and its functions to provide printed music for the praise team
Keep the library of music up to date and follow copyright requirements (thru volunteers)
Plan and lead weekly contemporary worship services at 10:30, September thru May. (Ten Sundays are off during those 9 months, including Christmas and Easter.)
Choose music as much as possible around a theme as established by the scriptures of the three-year lectionary and sometimes by the pastor when preaching on a series
Recruit and/or develop new musicians and singers sufficient to carry out weekly needs with an eye to increasing instrumental and vocal participation
Prepare the music portion of the order of worship and proof bulletin after providing needed information to the Administrative Secretary.
Develop and maintain relationships with members of the congregation beyond just the worship team and support the vision and mission of the church (see church’s website)
Work collaboratively with and under the guidance of the pastor and the minister of worship and music and coordinate coverage for personal absences through them.
Compensation and Miscellaneous
Orientation and ongoing guidance will be provided by the Minister of Worship and Music and/or other staff.
The Contemporary Worship Leader will provide at least 30 days notice before taking leave from this position.
The initial contract period will be for one year, (after a probationary period of three months), renewable on a yearly basis unless written notice to terminate the agreement is given by one of the parties.
During the contract period Ascension agrees to pay $1,500 per month ($13,500 annual total for the nine months during which the praise band is active (September – May). There is also opportunity to lead worship 3 times during the summer months on mutually agreeable dates with additional compensation of $375 per service.
All taxes, federal and state shall be the responsibility of the Worship Leader and no additional benefits will be paid with this agreement.
Once a year, the Board of Elders will reassess compensation and any special needs.
